As in the thread title, if i was too install 2 x 2gb sticks in the 2 and 4 slots on my motherboard would the results be the same as if i used 1 and 3. Motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-EP45-DQ6. Memory slots 1 and 3 are Yellow and 2 and 4 are red.

My last two Gigabyte boards (Core 2 Duo / i5 Lynnfield) had the ram installed in DDR3_2 / DDR3_1 or DDR3_4 / DDR3_3 slots, assuming you had two sticks, meaning the sticks should correspond to the color of the ram slot. So what you're saying is that having the ram installed in the two slots farthest away from the CPU is correct? The memory controller has to work with 4 sticks in 2 channels as opposed to 2 sticks in 2 channels, thus creating a very small performance decrease. The actually performance hit would not be noticeable though. In other words, if you are buying RAM for a new PC, got for 2 x 2GB. But if you already have 4 x 1GB it's fine.
